But behind all the tall tales was an actual woman named Martha Cannary, whose life was far less glamorous than the myths that grew around her. Calamity Jane, the "heroine of the plains!" Calamity Jane played many roles in life, from nurse to soldier, to mother. But this legendary frontier figure became an expert markswoman and rider and, dressed as a man, she held her own in rough, mining-town society. Allegedly a pony-express rider and then a scout for General George Custer in Wyoming, she was companion to Wild Bill Hickok, and was a heroine during the smallpox epidemic in the gold-rush town of Deadwood, South Dakota. She is said to have threatened "calamity" for any man who tried to court her, but in 1891 she married Clinton Burk(e) in El Paso, TX, who soon left her. She died in poverty, and is buried beside Hickok in Deadwood. This one-hour Biography will pull back the legend and reveal the truth behind the real-life Calamity Jane, a woman named Martha Cannary. Did she really ride as a scout for George Armstrong Custer? Did she really kill scores of Native Americans? Not really. Martha's story is one filled with half-truths and all-out lies, a life marked more by bleak poverty and alcoholism than by daring exploits.
