With him on this occasion were a group of dancers and two uncommonly creative musicians. Bassist William Parker's achievements as multi-instrumental leader of creative improvisatory ensembles earned him international acclaim at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Masashi Harada, a skilled and sensitive percussionist, once studied with John Cage in Finland and later lived and taught in his hometown of Hiroshima, Japan. Taylor has always spoken openly of his admiration for dancers and choreographers -- as well as architects -- and has even stated that musicians really ought to be able to dance in order to fully realize the art of music. The work at hand is preserved on this recording in two spheres, as it were. Under the heading of "Astral Fluid on the Earth" Taylor placed "Looking Into the Universe" and "Emerging from the Cosmic Exterial." These were followed by the "Soul Activities" -- "Feeling" and "Willing." One historic tributary of the pianist's fully ripened poetic presentational method traces back to his personal involvement with a member of Judith Malina and Julian Beck's Living Theatre group. Taylor, who has cited Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Michael McClure, and Robert Creeley as poetic influences, began incorporating live recitation into his ritual space during the '80s, using voice and body to concentrate on what he later referred to as a special kind of "dramaturgy." This might mean that the audience hears his voice (usually contorted and "off mike") even before they see him. Often it takes time for him to approach the piano or lay hands on it in order to generate piano sounds. Seeking to "use language to move outside of the self," Taylor honors the spirits of musicians like Thelonious Monk, whose conceptions he says live with him always, as well as the spirits of his own Afro-Cherokee and Kiowa ancestors. He accomplishes all of this by "making a commitment to the magic" which he describes as "incorruptible." This recording, like the event which it documents, transcends all notions and parameters of conventional presentation, let alone entertainment. There is a sense that the artists are tapping into something infinitely older, more vast and enduring than what usually passes for culture in mainstream media. "Art did not begin with us," quoth Cecil, "it was here before we got here." ~ arwulf arwulf
