Released in 1989, Fat Man and Little Boy was co-directed by Roland Joff and Bruce Robinson, and starred Paul Newman, Dwight Schultz (as Robert Oppenheimer), John Cusak, and Bonnie Bedelia. The shooting title The Shadowmakers was the one given to composer Ennio Morricone when he composed this score. Warner Bros. insisted on a name change after it was complete. Joff and the composer had worked together before quite successfully on the now legendary score for The Mission in 1986. The film's narrative concerns the Manhattan Project and its attendant secrecy, paranoia, and political gerrymandering. Morricone's music deftly reflects the shadowy, moody, dramatic surroundings of its history. While the opening theme "Above the Clouds" is a melancholic, somewhat dramatic ballad with wordless female contraltos in the backdrop -- and is used several times throughout the score as a "love theme," it is far from its finest moment. The long, taut suite-like "Fat Man Logo/Main Titles/Mysterious Meeting/A Faustian Bargain/Arrival at Camp" is far more intense, both in its clever use of martial snare drumming (in non-military cadences), countrapuntal string interludes, and brooding orchestra. Among the many cues, the all too brief "Icy Fusion Fizzles," with its trilling dissonant strings and winds and distorted gongs, is a true highlight. Chromatic tone poems that give away to bracing interludes mark "Give 'Em Dignity/Secret File/Guillotine," while other set highlights arrive with the woozy, dissonant strings in "Merriman's Accident" and its follow-up, "Will to Survive," a beautiful showcase for wind timbres amid static strings and taut brass. This deluxe edition brings together the entire score with a bonus disc of source cues, alternate takes, and even an unused finale, for a total of 103 minutes of music. The mastering by Michael Matessino is glorious. The packaging also includes liner essays by cinema journalist Daniel Schweiger and executive producer Dan Goldwasser. ~ Thom Jurek |
