The first piece on this recording, "Comes the Dawn" for Solo Soprano and String Quartet sung by Maurita Phillips-Thornburgh was written as the year 2000 commissioned work for the Music Teachers National Association and California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) with generous support from the R. Ernst and Sylvia Shepherd Family Living Trust. Texts for this work are drawn from Book Two of the five-part epic poem: "The Gardens of Flora Baum" by Julia Budenz, a poet I have worked with in the past. Ms. Budenz is widely published and recognized throughout the world as one of our most important contemporary poets. The work is in two parts: 1. "A Green Cry" is a setting of the poem "Overlap" and represents, in my mind, an allegory for former-present-future loves; 2. "Shall Singing Stop?" is a setting of "The Sheen" and represents the indefatigable hope of mankind in the face of crushing, desolate adversity. "Falling Leaves" is a duet for Solo Soprano, sung by Susan Mills Durham and Solo Violin, played by Nancy Roth. This piece again is settings of poetry by Julia Budenz. Three excerpts from "The Fire Escape" are used: 1. "Tree" extolls the majesty of the tree and its philosphical correlations to human existence; 2. "Season" deals with the shifting perspectives in the changing of seasons, focusing primarily on September, a poignant month for me as it is my birth month; 3. "Temple" again takes up the issue of September which heralds the first footsteps of the first fallen leaves. "Refuge" is a duet for two Sopranos, in this recording both parts being performed by Maurita Phillips-Thornburgh with full string orchestra. This slow, stately, monodic style piece is a quiet corner in our lives where the poet Suzanne Overall creates a place to go "Amidst the chaos of your days." and experience the "tender mercy" of the refuge we all seem to need and seek. There is a special place in my heart for the poetry of my good friend, Jenny Joseph, writer of the overwhelming popular "Warning" which is the text used for "I Shall Wear Purple". Coincidentally, this poem spawned "The Red Hat Society", a loose amalgamation of women througout the entire world that attend concerts, go to tea and whatever other functions that please them dressed in their finery always topped with a RED HAT. While Jenny poo-poos the world-wide fondness for this poem, she still reads it with gusto. In 1997, she was at the concert in Saranac Lake during the Adirondack Music Festival for the first performance by Rosalind Rees, Soprano and Steven Vosatka, piano. I can still see the twinkle in Jenny's eye and nod to me after the performance assuring me that she approved my setting. I am very fond of the performance for this CD of this piece as well as the following "And I Can Cry" ("Dirge") from Jenny Joseph's "Ghosts and other company" by Adelaide Sinclair, Mezzo-Soprano, and Coleen... |
