Confounding the expectations of fans and detractors alike, the late Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount, better known to terrestrials as Sun Ra, never laid in any one groove long enough to be typecast as anything...other than as an original. Way back in the 1950s, long before anyone had coined terms like "world music," "psychedelic," "free jazz" and "fusion," Sun Ra's big bands were staging costumed epics that broke down barriers between genres, and synthesized various elements of popular culture into the modern jazz and big band vocabulary. A virtuoso pianist deeply rooted in the conventions of stride and swing, Sun Ra anticipated and paralleled the work of other innovators such as Ahmad Jamal, Thelonious Monk, Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill. But Sun Ra's mark of distinction was that he became the first jazz pianist to display any genuine affection for electronic keyboard instruments. Sun Ra's taste for combo organ sounds, such as that of the portable Farfisa, endeared him to generations of forward-thinking rockers like Pink Floyd and NRBQ. The tone of MY BROTHER THE WIND, VOL. II is dominated by surprisingly straight-ahead blues grooves, colored by Sun Ra's spooky intergalactic organ. Combined with June Tyson's engaging vocals, this is quite an effect. But it is Sun Ra's fascination with what was then a revolutionary new instrument, the Mini-Moog, that gives this album such an edge. Sun Ra completely bypasses the imitation guitar route of later players like Jan Hammer, using the Mini-Moog as a pure sound-shaping device. For example, his improvisations on "The Wind Speaks," "Journey To The Stars" and "World of The Myth I" run the gamut of his pallet of expression from vacuum cleaners in heat to Saturnian dial tones. |
