Arranger: Steve Nieve. This concept album by long-time Elvis Costello sideman Steve Nieve explores the relationship between music and windows. A window connects two worlds; it links the internal to the external. Similarly, music unites a composer's thoughts with an external source of some kind. This source may be otherworldly or it may simply be a listener or audience. Either way, Nieve, seems to view a window as a vessel through which music can be communicated. Largely dreamy and reflective, this recording often captures the feeling of isolation. For an album based on openings, WINDOWS concentrates more on closures and solitude. Generally, this is not extroverted music. Most of these tracks are melancholic and feature contemplative piano melodies. "Window #8 (Alice's Window)" is one of Nieve's finest compositions. Glum and motionless, the piano tends to perseverate on the same gloomy theme over and over. However, this is extremely powerful and entrancing. Recorded all over the globe, Nieve supplements his music with cityscape sounds, voices, and nature effects. These compliment his piano playing and help to develop the window metaphor on each track. |
