Personnel: Cesare Nolli (guitars); Riccardo Gibertini (trumpet); Angelo Cattoni, Patrick Benifei (keyboards); Raymond Wright, Sean Daniel Martin, Sergio Cocchi (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Alessandro Nozza. Recording information: Alborosie Studio (JA) (2007-2008). Smoke have reggae music down to a science and their formula has enough soul to transcend its ingredients. What more can you ask for? Very little, actually. Routes is as no-nonsense reggae as it gets. At a time when every reggae act is either following a trend or trying to make a new trend catch on, these Italian (!) guys are teaching everyone a lesson: back to the basics! Routes, their second opus, has everything it takes to satisfy the reggae fan and even, maybe, make a little foray on the mainstream charts. And what's that "everything"? Rhythm, melodies, soulful voices, and a social conscience. No digital trickery, no hip-hop crossover, no guest producer roll call. Fronted by singer San Daniel Martin, whose voice recalls the young Horace Andy in its inflections, Smoke have the potential general appeal of the great Bob Marley. The simple yet well-exploited production values of Routes are in part responsible for that, but much must also be credited to the band's effective songwriting. The songs about relationships and harmony tend to be too light ("Don't Leave Me Today," "Wasn't It You") -- and it that sense, the album could have been trimmed down in size -- but the social issue songs hit the awareness nerve straight on, from Mao-era China ("Iron Man Wang") to children's rights ("Save All the Kids") and the resource plundering of Africa ("Ken Saro Wiwa"). Of course, nothing on Routes is particularly groundbreaking or original (except for the fact that it comes out of Italy), but that will start to bother you only after a few listens and, by then, bits like the call line to "Let There Be Light" and the addictive chorus of "Iron Man Wang" will have made deep-seated nests inside your pleasure centers. Reggae rarely got this universal. ~ Franois Couture

The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because for many retailers it was the day they went from being in the red to being in the black when they became profitable for the year. It is also the official beginning of the holiday shopping season, and Black Friday has become known for some of the best bargains, discounts and deals of the entire year! Everyone has watched stampeding crowds on the local news or diehard bargain hunters camping out overnight so they can be among the first to grab limited black friday specials at their favorite local retailers... However, if you prefer doing your holiday discount shopping from the warm and cozy comfort of home, then Cyber Monday was designed with you in mind! Online retailers spotted the Black Friday frenzy sweeping across the country as it took over brick and mortar locations - rather than compete for your black friday attention, they concocted a day that is all their own and named it Cyber Monday! The Monday after Thanksgiving is when your favorite online stores slash prices and offer their very best prices to help usher in the online holiday shopping season! That means big savings for you whether you choose to brave the local crowds on Black Friday or avoid the madness by browsing online during Cyber Monday Sales! Not to worry - the Friday and Monday after Thanksgiving might get the most attention for discount holiday shopping, but if you procrastinate beyond that magical bargain hunting window it doesn't mean you will be completely left out... In fact, this promises to be an exceptionally consumer-friendly holiday shopping season with sales, coupons and discounts extending far beyond Black Friday and Cyber Monday and allowing you to find the best prices on holiday gifts until the very last minute! Hoping to avoid discount shopping withdrawal? Even after Christmas and Hanukkah have come and gone, you'll still have After Holiday Specials to help usher in the New Year!
