Generally considered Shakira's proper album debut, Pies Descalzos is a tremendous breakout effort that too often goes overlooked by latter-day fans who discovered her once she began singing in English. In fact, some older Shakira fans will tell you that this is their favorite album because it's free of the world-conquering pretense that would sometimes constrain her later work. While it's a formative album in the sense that Shakira was still a teenager and was heavily reliant on co-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Luis Fernando Ochoa, Pies Descalzos is brimming with hit singles and has a nice balance of dance-pop, ballads, and rock. Moreover, the lyrics are fascinating not only because they came from the pen of a poetic teenager, but because they came from someone unburdened by international renown and chart-topping expectations. For Shakira fans who haven't gone this deep into her back catalog, Pies Descalzos makes for a delightful discovery. She actually released a couple prior albums, the teen pop efforts Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993), but they're better left forgotten. For all means and purposes, Pies Descalzos is where Shakira became the Shakira that fans came to know and love. Highlights include the dance-pop hits "Estoy Aqu," "Un Poco de Amor," and "Dnde Ests Corazn?"; the ballads "Antologa," "Quiero," and "Te Necesito"; and the rockers "Vuelve" and "Pies Descalzos, Sueos Blancos." These latter rock highlights point the way toward the style that Shakira and Ochoa would pursue on the blockbuster follow-up effort Dnde Estn los Ladrones? (1998), which was oriented toward the burgeoning rock en espaol market and found the young singer/songwriter turning wilder and flashier. All in all, Dnde Estn los Ladrones? may be the better album, but in some ways, Pies Descalzos is more likable and more enduring. Fans should have both in their collection. ~ Jason Birchmeier |
