Yu's Hip-Jazz project live in BPC, C.W.P. concert 2007 and 2008) B.B. King's Blues Club -L.A., HK City Hall's High Block -Hong Kong Harbour City -Hong Kong Sheung Wan Civic Centre -Hong Kong After studying with all these great musicians such as; Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Hal Crook, Mick Goodrick, David Fiuczynski (Hiromi, Screamming Headless Torso), Tim Miller (Terri Lyne Carrington), Alian Mallet (Paul Simon), Dave Santoro (Jerry Berrgonzi), Rick Peckham (Dave Libeman)...etc He decided to put out an album that concludes everything he has studied. "Beginning..." = Contemporary Grooves (Hip-Hop, Drum&Bass, R&B, Timbaland, Funk...etc) + Jazz Harmonies + Group Improvisations. 8 original compositions with Contemporary Jazz Harmonies over variety of Grooves. Featuring some of the best players in Boston area: Alto Sax: Alex Gordeev (Marcus Miller) Alto Sax: Nikolay Moiseenko (Marcus Miller, Me'Shell Ndegeocello) Piano/Wurly/Fender Rhodes: Mika Nishimura (IAJE sister in Jazz, Dave Libeman's IASJ project) Piano: Takeshi Ohbayashi (Terri Lyne Carrington, Gary Thomas) MicroKORG/Effects: Ayako Higuchi Electric Bass: Evan Marien (Greg Osby, Joe Lovano) Drums: Jeffrey Villanueva (Gongzilla) Mastered with Direct Stream Digital by Terrence Lai Wavemotion Ltd. Hong Kong and Leo Fung Bio: Fretted,Fretless,Microtonal Guitarist/Composer/Arranger Simon Yu was born in Hong Kong, 1987. He started his first classical piano lesson at 4 and he started to play guitar at 12. After he won the best guitarist award in a High School Band Competition when he was 14, he decided to be a professional musician. At 17, he came to U.S. and study music in Berklee College of Music. And he graduated in Dec 2007 majoring Performance and also Contemporary Writing and Production. By the influences of his traditional Chinese music musician family, he has been using some of the Chinese inflections in his playing and also in his composition too. Also, he plays and compose Micro-tonal music by mixing Chinese/Indian/Turkish micro-tonal systems with Western modern groove music. He is one of the performers of American Festival of Microtonal music on 2007, performing with his teacher David Fiuczynski's 'Micro Jam'. He also performed in the Hong Kong Dragonboat Festival in New York in 2007 summer, leading his quartet and performed his original tunes.
