In January of 2010 I suddenly found myself with a lot more time for reflection than perhaps I wanted. These were pretty dark times for a lot of people economically and, perhaps, especially for those of us in the Detroit area. For a long time, songwriting and making records has been something of a cathartic experience for me. Being engaged in an artistic process, being able to work out intellectual and emotional issues using poetry and metaphor wrapped in musical composition, helps me put things in perspective. I truly feel lucky to have so many talented friends and family members to draw into projects. I usually draw from the same well, but this time I added some fresh pouring in the forms of Kevin Kelly and Charlee Throneburg, old family friends. I was also thrilled to work with veteran record producer and dear pal Don Dixon again, and, of course, I can always expect greatness from Don Jones and Marshall and John Crenshaw. Over the years I have spoken with many people who have deep roots in the American traditions of Christmas, but have no ties or connection to the Christian aspects of it. People have been joining in celebrations to mark the end of the darkest days of the year in different forms as long as there have been civilizations. Atheist Christmas is a shout-out to my fellow Atheists, Agnostics, and Secular Humanists for whom Christmas has transcended its current birth mythology and, perhaps, returned to purer roots: showing appreciation for you friends and families, reaching out to those in need, sharing a sense of community, being thankful for those on whose shoulders we stand, triumphing over the odds of fate, and, of course, CELEBRATING.
