This act from Washington state has always sported one of my favorite band names, and their excellent roots rock has consistently lived up to their moniker. If I could describe their sound in a sentence, I'd say it would be as if Elvis Costello grew up in the Pacific Northwest and fronted The Replacements. 'Told You to Go' kicks things off with just the right mix of swagger, definance and yes, riffs; 'Evaporate' is another barnburner, 'Myth to Struggle With' shows they can take it down a notch and still deliver the goods, 'Roy Orbison' pays tribute to the man in their own style, rather than trying to imitate the inimitable, and 'End of All Things' is a standout closer. Riff On! -Absolute Powerpop Blog Nov.4,2008 The Riffbrokers offer a stunning snapshot of new-millennium rock and roll: firecracker guitars, cresting melodies and conviction enough to fuel a freight train. Weight of Line and Intersection aches and accelerates like Elvis Costello and Ray Davies conquering dusky heartbreak with mouthfuls of whiskey. - Brian T. Atkinson, American Songwriter magazine THE RIFFBROKERS 'WEIGHT OF LINE AND INTERSECTION' WRITTEN ON DECEMBER 25, 2008 BY POWERPOPAHOLIC IN POWER POP REVIEW The Riffbrokers are an excellent example of roots rock and power pop combined, with grit and character leading the way. Opening with the hard driving "Told You To Go" lead singer Nick Milward brings an energy similar to Bob Mould in approach. Listening to the next tune, "Evaporate" you get a full frontal guitar assault that compares with The Stones and Paul Collins Beat. The guitar jangle and harmonies are smoothly done on "Myth To Struggle With" recall Tom Petty during his Travelling Wilburys period. Another highlight are the tracks, "Apology" and "Roy Orbison" where the Riffbrokers live up to their name. The latter tune is a really nice tribute to the man in the dark shades being not the only "lonely one" musician. Nick Millward has gathered a fine crop of musical partners from other bands as The Young Sportsmen, North Twin and The Doll Test to help add those great riffs and pure pop harmonies throughout the album. "End of All Things" is another great standout to close off this album. It's all wonderfully done overall, without any filler that any rock and pop fan will enjoy. -Powerpopaholic.com 12/25/08 The Riffbrokers have gilded the lily on their third full length release entitled Weight of Line and Intersection . The husband and wife team of Nick and Heather Millward have gathered a fine crop of musical fellows from such bands as The Young Sportsmen, North Twin and The Doll Test to stack heaps of whip crack guitar and pure pop harmonies all over the ten songs on this outing. The sound is rootsy Americana without slipping into affectation. There's also plenty of driving rock and roll front loaded into this third offering. Check out the snarling guitars and barroom-throated singing on "Evaporate" or the strident chime of... |
