• SKU: 1964582 • UPC: 053254006823 • Shipping: $0.84 • Description: Personnel: John Olufs (vocals, guitar); Leroy Blackie Sleep (vocals, drums); Christy McWilson, Steve Marcus (vocals); Jim Sangster (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dave Conant (steel guitar); Paul Elliott (violin). Recording information: Egg Studios, Seattle, WA. Photographer: Karen Moskowitz. This 1992 CD is the debut release by The Picketts from Seattle, Washington. More than half the album's 14 songs were written by singing rhythm guitarist Christy McWilson and singing drummer Leroy "Blackie" Sleep. McWilson's vocals in particular are confidently emotive (her excellent solo debut, THE LUCKY ONE, appeared in 2000), and the band's harmonies draw on country traditions from the Carter Family to the Everly Brothers. The opening "Fool" introduces the band and their songs with friendly gusto. The Tex-Mex flavored "Seeing Red" evokes SEE HOW WE ARE-era X, and is just one of the classic songs introduced in this set which deserve to be covered. Highlights among the covers include the high lonesome wail of Tom Waits' "Heart of Saturday Night," and Otis Blackwell's relentlessly pumping "Let's Talk." |
