His father opened a music store when Michael was 7 and tried to encourage the same love for music that he had. Michael came to embrace his love for music at age 15 when he picked up his brother's Gibson J-50 and began playing. He naturally found his way to acoustic and then electric guitar, and any other stringed instrument, despite all those sax and piano lessons. Oddly enough, it was a bass guitar that was Michael's first instrument at age 8. I guess "kick the can" and "captain may I" were a lot more appealing in his younger days. Anyway, years later Michael gets very serious about his music and decides to do his first solo album, "Say Hello." It is a work of his life, love, loss and sometimes pain and frustration with all life can bring. The crux of the compilation is "Say Hello," a song about his brother who suffers from mental illness and extreme paranoia overshadowed with delusions of conspiracy theory complexities and the like. That accounts for the somewhat obscure lyrical content of the song. Another song with very emotionally deep attachment is "Flying." After the loss of his father in a plane crash in 1971, Michael has been plagued with dreams of his father returning, but then always leaving. He prayed that he could spend time in his dreams with his father and miraculously they were answered. He started having extremely vivid and very real dreams where he was actually flying with his dad again and remembers being amazed at the incredible skill level his father had in the cockpit. "Shanty Forest" touches on life in small, mid-west town America where the imaginations of a boy and his friends concoct stories of ancient Indian burial mounds and spirits dancing in the fire flames of a campfire in a small crop of woods just on the edge of town. "And Now," "My Love And..." and "Until The End" are love songs and "For Some Time" and "Tired" are about love lost. "A Lonely Sea" is about what it must be like to be far away from your loved one and the return journey as you're heading back to them. Michael said he thought about our troops returning from a tour of duty abroad by ship and the emotions they might be feeling on that what seemed to be a never-ending trip. "Will It Ever Change" is a song about people being driven by what they believe and what makes sense to some makes absolutely no sense to others. Michael says "man's greatest atrocities began with the noblest intentions." "Do You Know" is a self-examination song that speaks to the heart. A corporate world, drowning our ability to love in drink and smoke, a total detachment from the reality of those who live in lonely, impoverished and terrible situations crying out to an uncaring, numb civilization and the only song they hear is a horrible and resounding "NO."
