Matlock (keyboardist/vocalist) decided to concentrate on recording and especially wanted to do a lot of the kind of music he grew up listening to. He decided to begin working on this project at Magnolia Recording in Little Rock, Ark. working close with Chaps' bass guitarist and engineer Mac Heird. He got lots of help with the music from a number of his ex-Chap and Sweet Magnolia band members including Kenneth Williams, Phil Schlenker, Gary Ray, Doug Fulmer, Ray Scott, John W. Good & Heird. Then he got both Mike (Burger) Scoggins and Ray Scott to assist him on the vocals. Most of his early recordings were Buddy Holly & The Crickets - related material plus a few Matlock originals. Matlock wanted to get both the music & back-up vocals done as authentically as possible. Upon completion of a lot of material, Matlock contacted Holly's original producer/manager Norman Petty to try and get the ball rolling. Petty gave a good bit of encouragement and tried to make some deals but Matlock ended up reuniting with his former record producer/publisher Major Bill Smith in Fort Worth, Texas. Smith got involved immediately and Matlock had 2 albums and a number of single records on Smith's LeCam record label in the 1970's and 1980's. His 2 vinyl albums were entitled A Salute To Buddy From Matlock in 1978 and then The Magic Of Matlock in 1985. The 2nd album included some more Holly material, plus a lot of material from other 60's artists like Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Bobby Fuller, The Everly Brothers, Delbert McClinton, and Bob Dylan to name a few, along with some more originals including Matlock's biggest single - Oh! Buddy The Music Will Never Die. His Matlock Band played in Little Rock and throughout Arkansas plus Matlock himself went to some Buddy Holly conventions in Lubbock and got to meet some of his old-time rock heroes there plus play some of his music there as well. The Matlock Band itself played up well into the 1980's and had a few personnel changes but for the most part consisted of Matlock (keyboards/vocals), Kenneth Williams (lead/rhythm guitar/vocals), Phil Schlenker (lead/rhythm/steel guitar), Gary Ray (drums), Mac Heird (bass guitar), Polly Moore (vocals), and later John Good (guitars/steel/fiddle). Later Matlock band members included Bill McCumber on bass guitar and John Bradley on drums. After Matlock was over, Stueart Matlock sort of semi-retired and then was encouraged to get back involved in music by McCumber and Bradley and before too long started up a new group in the 1990's called the Basement Band (named after their practice place at 3rd & Spring in downtown Little Rock). This group included Matlock, McCumber, Bradley, Phil Schlenker on lead/steel guitar), with 2 female singers - Kristen Honea (now McCready) and Nadine Eichorn (now Morris). This... |
