It is truly a thrill to present works representing in part the last 27 years of my musical journey. Dayspring is the hope of a new day, a second chance, redemption, reconciliation, possibility, love, joy, peace! Mark Sterbank, tenor saxophone Charlton Singleton, trumpet Richard White, Jr., piano Kevin Hamilton, bass Quentin Baxter, drums About the music Dayspring, originally written for my Charleston solo debut, is a soothing melody in six featuring glistening harmonies evoking that moment when the first light breaks the horizon shining forth the hope of a new day ahead. Nomad, written for a composers' concert, portrays the wandering soul, searching for meaning, purpose, direction, for a home. It begins mysteriously in Phrygian with the piano then progresses into a somber minor theme stated by the horns but ends with a searching, hopeful chord. Leap of Faith was written as a companion to Nomad. The leap is first heard in the bass opening then also implied by both the difficulty of playing in five and the harmonies moving down by major third (or a leap in homage to John Coltrane's Giant Steps). Contrary Motion, first written for my Tenor Madness concert project with Robert Lewis, playfully and literally depicts the title with the theme and counter melody going in opposite directions, coming together on the bridge then going off in opposite directions again. Seventy Times Seven is my latest composition written as an exploration of the seven time signature. This funky tune underscores the need to always count when playing in seven just as Jesus admonished to forgive up to seventy times seven (or always). A glimpse of this can be heard in the vamp at the end of the tune punctuated by the drums. Leah's Lament, written for my graduate recital for my wife (then my fianc ), laments the feelings of separation that come with a long distance relationship and the longing to be reunited with your true love. Little Joy, written in 2013 for my grandson Asa, is a happy, lighthearted expression of all the joy, exuberance and sweet innocence that is miraculously contained in a four and a half year old. Tub of Blues, also written for the composers' concert, is a romping blues in three expressing that sometimes, when the blues comes, it comes in a big ol' tub. Images, my very first composition, is a haunting ballad featuring shifting, colorful harmonies with a poignant contrasting theme on the bridge. Slidin', was written for legendary funk trombonist and friend, Fred Wesley. An exploration of the blues in long form with a twist, listen for the funky lick at the end of the chorus.

The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because for many retailers it was the day they went from being in the red to being in the black when they became profitable for the year. It is also the official beginning of the holiday shopping season, and Black Friday has become known for some of the best bargains, discounts and deals of the entire year! Everyone has watched stampeding crowds on the local news or diehard bargain hunters camping out overnight so they can be among the first to grab limited black friday specials at their favorite local retailers... However, if you prefer doing your holiday discount shopping from the warm and cozy comfort of home, then Cyber Monday was designed with you in mind! Online retailers spotted the Black Friday frenzy sweeping across the country as it took over brick and mortar locations - rather than compete for your black friday attention, they concocted a day that is all their own and named it Cyber Monday! The Monday after Thanksgiving is when your favorite online stores slash prices and offer their very best prices to help usher in the online holiday shopping season! That means big savings for you whether you choose to brave the local crowds on Black Friday or avoid the madness by browsing online during Cyber Monday Sales! Not to worry - the Friday and Monday after Thanksgiving might get the most attention for discount holiday shopping, but if you procrastinate beyond that magical bargain hunting window it doesn't mean you will be completely left out... In fact, this promises to be an exceptionally consumer-friendly holiday shopping season with sales, coupons and discounts extending far beyond Black Friday and Cyber Monday and allowing you to find the best prices on holiday gifts until the very last minute! Hoping to avoid discount shopping withdrawal? Even after Christmas and Hanukkah have come and gone, you'll still have After Holiday Specials to help usher in the New Year!
