While this is their first CD, this group is hardly new to each other. They have performed countless gigs together, and in that time together the have forged an organ jazz sound unique to themselves. This unique sound preserves the spirit of organ jazz in a way that strict traditoinalists cannot. Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff didn't just 'reserve' jazz, they innovated. They combined urban pop styles and modern jazz concepts with traditional jazz to form their sound. Just as McGriff utilized the sounds of his day, Ken Clark has melded funk and modern jazz from the seventies, eighties, and nineties with traditional organ jazz. Ken's powerfull bass lines mixed with some exotic harmony forms the basis of an organ jazz sound for the year 2000. The Dance opens with a verse that both drives and lilts. That verse flies headlong into a dense bubbling bridge. Benny Benson's drums manage to tie all elements together, and his solo section works to deepen the feel even as he explores the outer reaches of the song. Let's Get On With It takes a driving R & B groove through its paces then moves it out into KCOT territory where Mike Mele shapes the R & B with his rootsy jazz style. A Little Bit of Everything settles in with a laid back groove, then nails you with some dramatic dynamic shifts. The classic bop tune Pent Up House serves as change of pace. The trio supplies the vigor that this upbeat tune requires. Melinda brings a rainy day mood with beautiful guitar melody i Mike Mele's trademarked soulful style, and Blues no Mo lights the mood again with its confident jazz-blues mixed with up-tempo funky gospel. The speedy bop tune Airegin puts the band's sheer technical mastery on display. Mike balances his tastefull performance from Melinda with out and out vituosity here. The ballad Intrigue Me balances an inviting melody with deep harmony, wihile Shufflin just shuffles with a straight ahead groove that Benny manages to inject new life into. Satin Doll allows the group to explore their dynamic range in this delicate classic. The addition of horn section allows the group to capture more of that classic Ellington magic. Frutti Booty takes rootsy funk to the fore. Ken desplays all the funk organ tricks of the trade, including some new ones as this tune brings this CD to a positive energetic close. |
