This album is his first venture into solo waters. The album was recorded at TWEED STUDIOS in Oxford, Mississippi and engineered/mixed/mastered by Jeffrey Reed (formerly of Ardent Studios and Blackdog Records) of TAPROOT AUDIO DESIGN. What's your background in music? 'I always messed around with the guitar, but nothing to write home about. Then in the Eighties I joined a band with Chris Hudson (he's a cousin to one of Alt-Indie-Country's pioneers and Mississippi gem Cary Hudson (Blue Mountain)). Around 82-83 Cary came down and played with us to open a festival and then we all parted ways. Years later Chris asked me to help design some graphics for their new startup record label BLACKDOG RECORDS. I did, and got to work with and meet several great musicians (Duff Dorrough, Beaver Nelson, members of MARAH, Virgil Brawley, John Stirratt (WILCO), Boone Daughdrill (THE BAND PERRY). But before long 'real life' got in the way and I had to scale back on music and all that.' What got you back in the business? 'I didn't write or play anything or anywhere for ten years or so. Long story short, I was teaching school in McComb when I got a call that said my good friend and mentor Jimmy George passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. I had put off going to see him on a Wednesday night and he died the next day. A week or so later I woke up at 2 a.m., dusted off the guitar and wrote a song called 'He Won't Walk Away', top to bottom, in about 20 minutes. Jimmy had always said 'do what you love and the rest will work itself out.' It's a shame that when someone dies their words ring truer and hit harder. Passing time suddenly became very real to me as it was slipping away. I always knew that in my head, but now my soul had a sense of urgency.' How'd the album come about? 'We weren't going to put out a 484 SOUTH album this year and I've never had a lot of songs on our albums anyway, so I was itching to spread my wings a little. I had tons of songs literally lying around the house and was planning on bringing a few of those along with some that didn't make the 484 cut, to life. Then one restless rainy night I came across a DICTIONARY OF AMERICANISMS by John Russell Bartlett (1848). One of the entries was about the 'new' phrase 'acknowledge the corn.' The meaning was suggested 'as to confess or acknowledge an imputation or mistake.' With a lot of crap going on personally, I decided to write all new songs from that point on and 'acknowledge the corn' for the most part. I've never written a song to try to make a 'hit.' I guess that sounds ridiculous if you're trying to be in this business doesn't it. Well, that's me. I just write songs that mean something to me and hope they hit home with other people. That's all I'm looking to do really.' How would you describe the album? 'I'm not breaking any new ground, really,... |
