Dizzybloom - Heroes for Ghosts (Wolf River Music c2011) Listening to Dizzybloom and their latest EP "Heroes for Ghosts" brings to mind the sometime disappointing nature of the independent music and record industry. I mean that in a good way for Dizzybloom. If you've ever listened to an artist and wondered why they are not as well-known as other acts; this was exactly my initial emotion when listening to Dizzybloom. This is more than likely one of the better projects you have never heard of. I loved the record and the bands performance. Originally formed in in Austin, Texas, in 1995 by guitarist/bassist Billy R. Preston, keyboardist Juliet Gamero and vocalist Stacy Evans as a songwriting team, which after time evolved into a recording and performing power-pop band with the addition of guitarist Steven Oakes. This original lineup went on to record their self-titled debut album "Dizzybloom" in 1997 and toured consistently throughout the Lone Star State. After an 11-year hiatus, the band connected with new vocalist Ashley Glover, and recorded what would turn out to be some of their best work; a new 5-song EP titled "Heroes for Ghosts." The record was brilliantly arranged and produced by Mark Hallman at Congress House Studios in Austin, Texas. "Heroes for Ghosts" begins with "Lost Memories." This song presents the vibe and mood for the rest of this wonderful EP. The song provides inspirational lyrics and the powerful, yet angelic, signature vocals of Ashley Glover. The very well arranged backing vocals, combined with awesome guitar and keyboard work with powerful modulations, are by far a huge part of this songs opulent production. Track #2, "Close Your Eyes" is a personal favorite from this disc. The beatific vocals from Ashley Glover and the melodic chord changes from light to heavy, make this song not only musically intriguing but quite simply a fantastic treat for the ears. With a little nicely placed synth thrown in and overall ethereal styling, this song is wonderful. Moving on to the 3rd track, "The Silent Heart", this track once again brings out the awesome songwriting and performance abilities of this act. Juliet Gamero's shifts from piano and Hammond B3 are soothing and provide great substance for this nicely arranged tune. The classic smash hit, "Dream On" from the iconic rock band Aerosmith is the 4th track. Covering this song took a lot of courage and grit. With undeniable adulation, they sure pulled it off in a big way. Dizzybloom's version and arrangement resembles the original from the superstar act, but with a touch and style of their own. Ashley Glover was right on with the vocals and the guitar work was awesome. This was definitely a very nice surprise. The final track on this record, "Power and Light" has the longest runtime on the record, and a very long introduction. But it's worth listening to every second.
