(Claudia and Jill) and was written specifically for their talents and personalities. The virtuosic first movement is inspired by the sound and power of the wind. The second movement highlights the duo's lyricism and builds slowly to a single "zenith." The third movement is based on salsa rhythms and harmonies. Z3 was commissioned by the PA Music Teachers Association. I wrote ONE FOR FOUR (1985) for my flute quartet at Texas Christian University. It is in ABA form with an aleatoric transition to the final A section. The outer sections emphasize the intervals of the P4 and tritone within the octatonic scale, while the B section emphasizes the consonant P5 within the diatonic scale. PHILADELPHIA PORTRAITS (2011) is dedicated to Lois, who commissioned the piece and premiered it at the National Flute Association Convention in 2011. Each movement has a subheading: I. Vincent Persichetti The place where men meet to seek the highest is holy ground (Felix Adler, quoted by Persichetti) II. John Coltrane Let us sing all songs to God To whom all praise is due ... (Coltrane, A Love Supreme) III. Marian Anderson I dearly love Negro Spirituals. They are the unburdenings of the sorrows of an entire race, which, finding scant happiness on earth, turns to the future for its joys (Anderson) IV. Benjamin Franklin Of all my inventions, the glass armonica has given me the greatest personal satisfaction (Franklin) V. Betsy Ross Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue (George M. Cohan, "You're a Grand Old Flag") The title of ARCA SACRA (1997) is a palindrome, reflecting the fact that the piece is full of musical palindromes as well as other kinds of symmetries, including inversion, rhythmic grouping and registral expansion. I composed DEVELOPING HUES (1989) at the Yaddo artist colony, surrounded by visual artists and glorious autumn leaves. The movements are named after common oil paints. "Satin White," which explores the registral and timbral qualities of the two instruments features inversional symmetry. "Cerulean Blue" is a bluesy movement based on a repeating harmonic pattern. "Cadmium Red Light" (based on a 12-tone row) is fast and virtuosic. The original was for flute and bass clarinet; Andy helped with this arrangement, especially in regard to the multiphonics. QUINTLEXIA (2013) can be performed as a quintet or as a flute choir piece.
