'The songs on the 'White' album were written and recorded when I was facing the challenge and privilege of raising three sons, ministering to aging parents, and dealing with various changes in and all around me. The song 'Don't Go Back' was inspired by the disappointment I felt after seeing so many changes to my old stomping grounds in Ames, Iowa, where I was born and raised. Upon expressing my disappointment to my mother, she simply said, 'Don't go back, Carol.' 'For My Father' was written when my father was going through a severe depression. It was the first time I looked into my father's eyes and said the words 'I love you, Dad.' ' If you love moonlight and mornings, family and friends, and just being alive, you'll love the music of 'White'. Why 'Write'? Elder Edmund Dumas wrote 'White', which I found on an album called the Original Sacred Harp. My sources tell me that Dumas wrote 'White' for a friend named Benjamin White. Bruce Millard, a multi-talented Boston musician and good friend of mine, arranged the version I recorded and also wrote additional words and music as a descant for the tune. Quotes 'Powerful. Beautiful. Harmonic. Soulful. Real. As a five-day-a-week columnist for The Des Moines Register I was always on the lookout for story ideas. I first encountered Montag when thumbing through the 'Women's Music' section of a local record store. Being intrigued by her album cover, I couldn't resist the experiment. What a find. Upon hearing her music I was stunned and couldn't wait to write about her. Once I even rented a bus and took a bunch of Register reporters and editors on a trip across Iowa to hear Carol sing at Stone City. Carol has a true gift and is a true Iowa treasure.' Julie Gammack former Des Moines Register columnist 'Carol has the voice of an angel. Timeless, transporting, lovely, and evocative. Lyrically wise and uplifting.' Robert Lindsey Nassif Theatrical music composer 'Carol has the type of voice that fills one with wonder and awe...you could hear a pin drop.' Doug Oleson The Ogle County Life-Rock 'A gifted songwriter with an angelic voice, yet down-to-earth delivery. She seems born to hold a guitar and beams when she plays one.' Monie Hayes The Hawk Eye 'Carol has a touch of homespun about her, but she takes the stage like a pro.' Chuck Mitchell 'She sings from the heart about places in all our hearts with a golden voice and overtones of serious musical accomplishments. She charmed us, humbled us, and we all made a friend.' The Earfood Entertainer LaCrosse, WI '...a singer of new songs written by her for her. Carol is not folk or blues or modern, she cannot be categorized, she must be heard.' Burlington Area Arts Burlington, IA '...a folksinger who has a voice that rivals Joan Baez...' (excerpt from a review after opening for Arlo Guthrie) Pat Haynes The Des Moines Register Tom Paxton Early in her career Montag was described by folk music... |
