With him every Sunday are the great bassist, Steve LaSpina, with guitarist Jim Hall for many years and guitarist John Hart, known for his long time tenure with Hammond B3 master, Jack McDuff. 'The Jazz Brunch at Cafe Loup - replete with world class, swinging music and food to tempt the palate - is a must to experience...indescribably delicious!' Jazz Improv Magazine May 2006 In recent years an ever growing audience, here and abroad, has become aware of the rare, individual sound and depth of the playing of tenor saxophonist, BOB KINDRED.. Of his most recent releases, critics have said " It's fair to say that Kindred now ranks with the giants of his instrument, with Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, John Coltrane and Zoot Sims." Chuck Berg, Jazz Times "He expresses a kind of beauty and depth rarely heard...his beauty of tone is simply awesome." Hugh Wyatt, The New York Daily News "Bob Kindred's powerful, surging tenor is revelation. Where has this man been?...Absolutely astounding!" JAZZTIMES, England. Kindred's craft was first honed in his native Philadelphia working with organ trios led by Groove Holmes, Charles Earland and Shirley Scott. He then toured with several big bands including WOODY HERMAN'S THUNDERING NEW HERD. His commitment to the future of jazz led to his being a clinician/performer in the field of jazz education with the INTERNATIONAL ART OF JAZZ, FESTIVAL JAZZ and the SMITHSONIAN JAZZ REPERTOIRE COMPANY. In 1992 he was the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a concert entitled "TO BEN AND JOHNNY, WITH LOVE", a tribute to Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges. The concert with chamber orchestra also featured jazz greats, bassist, Red Mitchell, drummer, Edmund Thigpen and reminiscences from Milt Hinton, all of whom had long histories with Hodges and Webster. Kindred's latest recording is on the Venus label from Japan. The all-star rhythm section with him are bassist George Mraz, drummer Ben Riley and pianist John D'Martino. On other recent recordings he has been featured with Little Jimmy Scott on two CDs, "Over the Rainbow" and "But Beautiful" with Joe Beck, Wynton Marsalis, Renee Rosnes, George Mraz and Lewis Nash. He appears on English singer Ian Shaw's "Soho Stories", on "Secret Ellington...Renaisance," a CD of previously unrecorded Ellington music and he has recorded a duet CD with pianist Larry Willis, "The Gentle Giant of the Tenor Sax" on Mapleshade. Recent appearances throughout the US and Europe include regular engagements at RONNIE SCOTT'S in London, the TOPEKA JAZZ FESTIVAL, the COLORADO SPRINGS JAZZ PARTY, the recent "Tribute to the Nicholas Brothers" at CARNEGIE HALL,... |
