	• Manufacturer: AEC • SKU: 17426076 • UPC: 700261390710 • Shipping: $1.12 • Description: COLOURS was recorded in the beautiful acoustic of the Moores Opera House at the University of Houston, in Houston, TX., in order to get the most authentic and flattering sound for the flute and piano. Orchestral musicians Aralee, Scott and Judy are colleagues in the Houston Symphony and are accustomed to working with the natural acoustics of a large concert hall when they perform. Aralee self-produced this recording as a debut recording for herself and chose the repertoire to highlight the work she does in the orchestra, beginning with 'Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun' by Debussy, the quintessential flute solo from the symphonic literature. All the works have this connection to the the orchestra, including two adaptations of Aralee's own, the Roumanian Dances and the popular chamber orchestra gem, Pulcinella Suite. Pulcinella features flutist Judy Dines, whose ability to both blend and to shine out in her own right are showcased. To pianist Scott Holhouser falls the formidable task of creating 'an orchestra in a bottle' by distilling the moods and colors of each work through great skill and knowledge of the repertoire. (If you listen intensely yourself, you may be able to imagine the lush strings, the mellow brass, and the woodwinds of every hue, coming from the piano and the 2 flutes.) The pieces on this album also share a dreamy, iridescent quality. The six different composers, whose birth dates span from 1862 to 1910 are considered modern, 20th-century composers (but are no longer living.) Each work features beautiful, sometimes impressionistic harmonies and delicate textures. The beautifully designed 6 paneled packaging of the physical CD contains a 'color wheel' of text inside, designed especially for the non-flutist who might not be familiar with the works and composers. They offer a bridge to understanding the ethos of each work. For the digital purchaser, you may read them here, identified by track: 1 The translucent sound of a solo flute introduces an orchestral dreamscape of undersea colors and harmonies--sounds which changed music forever when first heard in Paris in 1894. '...the flute of the faun brought new breath to the art of music' (Pierre Boulez) 2-8 Vibrant miniatures with meltingly beautiful melodies make up this suite of dances by Bartok, the masterful Hungarian composer also known for his pioneering interest in indigenous music. 9 Contemplative hues and streaks of sadness color this short work for flute and piano, which Barber wrote for a flutist friend in 1961. A year later, the same music became the middle movement of his Piano Concerto, with the flute retaining a prominent role. 10 The anxiety-tinted 'Ballade' takes us on a journey through unsettled moods and builds to a frenzied but triumphant finish. Swiss composer, Martin, scored the work for solo flute, piano and string orchestra. 11 A dusky and lonely landscape prevails at the beginning and end of 'Poem'. In between are other sights, all radiant with...
