From brief interludes of sounds of water flow ballads of love and loss, joy and peace, music that moves, and some very fine guitar playing. Honest and intimate singing is interspersed with from-the-heart acoustic guitar instrumentals. Two non-original arrangements from guitar virtuosos Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins complete the celebration of things steel-stringed. Primarily an acoustic album, this often serene album may surprise those familiar with 'Al Dawson', the far-from-shy rock guitarist known in the Triangle area of North Carolina. Lucky Seven is about the songs, but there is never a shortage of interesting and very fine guitar playing on a Dawson album. Two-thirds of the way through the album, out come the electric guitars to round out a most versatile display of command of the instrument. The album closes as it began, with the sounds of water and three beautiful songs, the last being a lullaby. Let the music wash over you and through you. Liner notes from the album cover: Lucky Seven. My songs collected. Songs of love and loss. I wonder if love and loss are really two sides of the same thing. Perhaps you have to know one to truly know the other. I do know that they are both the stuff of a life fully lived. This is a collection of most of my original compositions made up over the years ... many, many years. Two songs were written together with my old friend Jeff Gibbons: 'City Lights' and 'In Your Hands'. I play two instrumentals that are non-original: 'Angelina' by guitarist extraordinaire, Tommy Emmanuel, and 'Vincent', by Don McLean, the beautiful tribute to a great artist never appreciated in his own lifetime, Vincent Van Gogh. 'Angelina' and 'Vincent' I thought fit with the overall acoustic guitar nature of most of this album. I am sometimes asked about the origins of these songs. They are not 'for' or 'about' any one person or situation, but rather about you, the one who would listen to these songs and really hear, finding yourself and your own experience reflected in the music - heard between the lines. Do me a favor? Treat this recording like a movie. Sit down with your best system and listen through it. Let the music wash over you and through you. Lucky Seven was recorded in my home studio using Sonar by Cakewalk. Acoustic guitars used were a 2010 Recording King RO-227, 1972 Martin D-28, and 1967 Ramirez 1a, recorded with AKG C1000S or Neumann U87 mics. Gibson and Fender electric guitars were used on several tracks. The choral fugue melody at the end of 'Tales of the Mighty Armada ' is courtesy of J.S.Bach from the last movement of the Mass in B Minor, the Dona Nobis Pacem - 'Give Us Peace'. Indeed ...
